DIN 18800 Section 7: Certification of manufacturer compliance for steel structures (construction)

(Structural steel engineering, crane production, radio/transmitter antenna bearing structures, steel construction, etc.)

This is a certification system that steel structure manufacturers need to have in order to bring such products to Germany. Due to its eminence, this certificate is recognized by all and stipulated by many European States.

DIN 18800-7 standard forms the basis of the European standard enforced in 2010 in the same field (EN 1090).

In this system, the companies are identified under 5 classes as A, B, C, D and E. The certification is conducted for classes B, C, D and E. These classes are shortly defined as follows:

Class A: Compliance certificate is not required for companies under this class.
Class B: Small-scale compliance certificate - Static structures
Class C: Extended small-scale compliance certificate - Static structures
Class D: Big-scale compliance certificate - Static structures
Class E: Big-scale compliance certificate extended to the dynamic field - Dynamic structures

Depending on the class of certification, the infrastructure, hardware and personnel requirements expected from the companies vary.


DIN EN 1090: Certification of manufacturer compliance for aluminum structures

This standard entered into force on 1.1.2011 and was prepared for the certification of the compliance of the manufacturers of steel and aluminum structures. It is valid in all the European Union states. As per the decision of the German Structural Technique Institute (DiBt) the validity of DIN 18800-7 and DIN 4113-3 certifications (co-acceptance with EN 1090-1 certification) has been extended to 01.07.2014.

EN 1090 standard is comprised of 3 parts:

EN 1090-1 : Requirements for the compliance audit of the structural components
EN 1090-2 : Technical requirements for steel structures (comparable to DIN 18800-7)
EN 1090-3 : Technical requirements for aluminum structures (comparable to DIN 4113-3)

There are 4 application classes: EXC 1, EXC 2, EXC 3, EXC 4

The requirements increase from EXC1 to EXC4 in terms of application, documentation, test and traceability.

EN 15085-2: Production, Audit and Certification of Rolling Stock (Railway Vehicles)

In order to export railway vehicles, components thereof and relevant services to the European states, the companies performing activities in this field need to be certified. The certification has to be made by specialized, impartial bodies that own an international accreditation.

The certification can be made at 4 classes depending on the field of activity of the company.

Class 1: New production, replacement and repair of railway vehicles and elements thereof.
Class 2: New production, replacement and repair of non-pressurized containers (without a defined test pressure)
Class 3: Welding of simple additional components (tools, etc.)
Class 4: For enterprises that do not make welding on their own (designers, purchasers and assemblers)

Depending on the class of certification, the infrastructure, hardware and personnel requirements expected from the companies vary.


ISO 3834 (former EN 729): Quality Management System for enterprises performing welded production (DVS-Zert)

This is a quality management system designed for enterprises performing welded production. This is a system that is also necessitated by applications such as DIN 18800-7, EN 15085, EN 1090, etc. One of the prerequisites to obtain both of the certificates is for the enterprise to possess a quality system compliant to ISO 3834 standard.

The enterprises that have established and certified their compliance to ISO 9001 system can easily adapt to ISO 3834 system with a few simple activities since both standards contain similar requirements. However ISO 3834 standard is prepared specially by considering the requirements of enterprises making welded production.

The certification is conducted internationally through DVS-ZERT1 or SLV2.

Ril 804: Production of Railway bridges

This is the system where the companies wishing to manufacture welded railway bridges are certified. This is a certificate granted to the companies, holding a DIN 18800-7 Class "E" compliance certificate for the production of steel structures, after they also fulfill the requirements of Ril 804 standard. This is a standard that is especially highly-demanding in terms of personnel qualification requirements (production engineering - welding, welding engineering).


DIN 4113: Aluminum structures

This is a certification for the companies manufacturing welded aluminum structures working under static loads. This is a certificate that companies need to possess in order to export welded aluminum structures to Germany.

Due to its eminence, this certificate is recognized by all and stipulated by many European States. DIN 4113-3 standard also forms the basis of the European standard enforced in 2011 in the same field (EN 1090).

ISO 9001 certification is conducted internationally through DVS-ZERT.
